The important thing to remember is that they are not the same thing. Landlord insurance is owned by the landlord, whereas the renter will most likely need to get their own insurance on top of the existing landlord insurance. This is because landlord insurance actually ONLY protects the landlord. If there is damage to the home caused by the renter it will be their responsibility to take care of it.

That being said, landlord insurance will sometimes cover some of the appliances and fixtures in a renter’s home. If you are a renter and you are unsure of what is covered in their policy, check-in with your landlord to see.

While there are many good reasons to invest in renters insurance, one is in case of damage or loss of your items. If you have insurance and your home is broken into, you could get coverage on replacing those items.
